The Green.

Glasgow People's Palace and Winter Gardens before Council's re-imagining.

People's Palace Winter Gardens after Council re-imagining plans emerged.

There has been a treasure on Glasgow Green for 124 years, it's called "the Peoples Palace and Winter Gardens. At the time of opening, one, Lord Rosebery, dedicated it to the people of Glasgow, for ever and ever. 124 years on and the Glasgow City Council have other ideas. Having let it fall into a state of disrepair, they pillaged its contents and shredded the wonderful winter garden's plants, leaving it a shell deteriorating before our eyes. They floated ideas such as re-imagining its use, which usually means turning it into a venue from which corporate bodies can make lots of money, and we the public would have to pay to use it for the purpose it was never intended.
However, the good people of Glasgow see this as pillage and plunder of their assets, and are carrying on a campaign to have it restored and returned to its former use, a place displaying the history of the people of Glasgow and the Winter Gardens a place of pleasure for all, free of charge, as it was intended and dedicated to all those 124 years ago. Let's get behind this campaign and bring the Glasgow Council to their senses, making them realise, they are there to protect and mange our public assets, not to dispose of them, and we the public pay their wages and expenses, and very generously at that.
On Saturday, 22nd. January, the Friends of People's Palace, Winter Gardens and Glasgow Green, held a protest, one of many, outside the Winter Gardens. We need to swell the numbers taking part in this worthwhile campaign. It is a fight for that which is ours, it's our People's Palace and Winter Gardens, we want it back to what it was, no re-imagining.

Keelie.

Bang on time, out comes the August edition, issue 21, of the Glasgow Keelie. As usual, packed with info, snapshot of the past and lots of what is happening here and now plus some of the shenanigans of our city council, that bunch that we house in the Kremlin in George Square that are hell bent on closing libraries, community centres, swimming pools etc. Check it out on line and you may be able to pick up a hard copy on the street and at events, look out for the rickshaw.

Glasgow Council Plunders Public Spaces.

From Save The Steps campaign:
Another public space to become a private shopping mall.
To all our amazing supporters,

You will have probably heard, through social media and local news coverage, that Glasgow City Council voted in favour of demolishing the steps at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 11 votes - 4 votes.
This also means that the Donald Dewar statue will be moved further down Buchanan Street, just outside the Sainsburys on Cathedral Street / Bath Street.
Our team are inevitably gutted with the decision, with a demonstration of more than 100 people, over 2,000 individual objection letters and emails, 15,000 signatures (and rising) showing how unpopular their plans are for this valued public space.
The appalling attitude of the council is clear in this radio interview, where councillor Liz Cameron dismisses our huge petition as unimportant compared to the Council's long-term plans. You can also hear our fabulous campaigner Aileen McKay expressing the outrage we all feel at the decision the council have taken. Thanks to Clyde 1 for giving us the air-time to get our point across - the BBC didn't even bother to contact us!
We'd like to thank you for your ongoing support in signing the petition, the letters you sent to your local councillors and those who attended the demonstration on the 15th February. We could not have raised the awareness that we did or got as much media coverage.
However, this is NOT the end of our campaign as we wish to continue to raise awareness of the Council's plans and the privatisation of public spaces within Glasgow city centre.
Some folks, out-with of our team, have organised an “Occupy The Buchanan Street Steps” event, this Saturday 28th February at 12pm.
Details can be found on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/896701807057841
Following on from the protest on the 15th February, it'd be good if supporters could turn up with “Hands off our public space” styled banners, placards, flags etc. Be creative!
Demolition is not due for some time yet, so we still have an opportunity to show our opposition to the plans.
Please continue to sign and share the online petition where you can and tell your friends and family.

Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday afternoon.

Sometimes,Self Help Needs Help.

A call for support and solidarity from a local Glasgow group, "LoveMilton", as usual bureaucracy stands in their way. Sometimes self-help needs a little help.

Hi

For the last 5 years LoveMilton have been working hard to achieve their dream of building a new community centre in Milton in the North of Glasgow as a community self-build project. Using the building process to actually train, upskill and qualify local residence in sustainable building techniques giving them the skills, confidence and access to better employability. We have already trained over 135 people through smaller building projects in the area and have everything lined up for our first big community build. The land we have identified for the build is derelict and owned by the people of Glasgow, however, transfer of the land is proving impossible and without this transfer LoveMilton looks set to close at the end of this financial year. Please show your support for our project by signing this petition. Thank you.

Glasgow's Dirty Washing.

Just a reminder, 11:00am. Saturday, August 3, 2013, Glasgow Green is the opportunity to vent your feelings of disgust for the way the Glasgow City Council shows contempt for you and your communities. See Crook In Suits for more information. This event could be one of Glasgow's biggest displays of public disgust for the political class, done with an element of fun for all the family, but only if you are willing to come on down and take part. There is only about ten days left to get organised and paint up all that dirty washing, so get in touch, get involved, show how you feel about the way the Glasgow City Council rips you off.
